Words From Our Volunteers

People have always said that the ultimate proof of actually learning something is to be able to synthesize and share the knowledge. I've pursued the mastery of English for so long, but I've never considered teaching about what I've learned. That, of course, was the case only until I joined Beyond Horizon. Aside from being able to connect with enthusiastic and diligent kids, I am able to crystallize my knowledge and pass them down.＂

＂Beyond Horizon proved to be an experience that can really change one’s attitude: what I initially thought to be an onerous weekly task turns out to be an activity I enjoyed. As an English tutor, I found gains from this devotion that prompted me to reflect on how English is more than a subject. It’s a language that by teaching to these kids, can be adapted to their lifestyle and connect to the globe. I aspire to continue my efforts now to help more kids expand their perspectives and view beyond their horizon.＂

＂Over the past year, I’ve seen my students grew exponentially. From barely recognizing transition phrases to reading through an entire passage without assistance, I was extremely proud of their accomplishments. But more importantly, I’m certain that aside from language mechanisms and grammar tactics, they had developed life-long skills that can serve them well throughout the rest of their academic career. The seemingly inconsequential Friday evening had trained them how to communicate with a complete stranger, express opinions on current events, and manage academic discipline through pre-lesson preparation. Despite the physical barrier, it is tremendously invaluable to see my students booming with confidence and knowing that I contributed to their growth. That said, I would like to thank the student leaders, staff, and volunteers of Beyond Horizon for their diligent efforts in coordinating this project. The seemingly short experiences of my experience with tutoring allowed me to gain a more refined understanding of the English language and also provided me with the chance of working with different individuals. It would be my pleasure to continue participating in the project for the upcoming future.＂
